KENZO RYOKO 2009 Fragrance Collection

Summertime calls for travel. Travel calls for tiny versions of your favorite beauty products. KENZO has answered this call with their RYOKO 2009 collection of fragrances.

RYOKO is a pocket-sized, ultra-light fragrance pebble. Each smooth RYOKO, which means travel in Japanese, houses one of Kenzo’s beautiful scents in a series of five colorful, ergonomically-designed stones that fit into the palm of the hand and is TSA-friendly (less than 3 oz). The Ryoko pebbles are saturated in high-gloss color and are suspended in a see-through box, which is meant to signify the irony of modern travel: motion without movement.

For her:
FlowerbyKenzo eau de parfum nomad spray
KenzoAmour eau de parfum nomad spray
L’eauparKenzo eau de parfum nomad spray

For him:
L’eauparKenzo pour homme nomad spray
Kenzo Homme nomad spray

I tried the L'eauparKenze scent, a watery floral scent. Its surprisingly fresh and yet heavy at the same time. A fun change from my fruity florals, so I'm adding it to the rotation. And in my little ziplock bag, it didn't spill or leak on the plane. Sold!

Crescent Row: A New Fragrance Collection By Benefit

I am crazy about Benefit's new collection of fragrances, Crescent Row. The are inspired by a row of adorable houses in Bath, England that the daughters of the founder stumbled apon. Each scent is very unique and different, so one of them is sure to please you. I had a chance to try out all three, and although I liked Laugh with me LeeLee a lot, Something About Sophia won my heart! It is just the right mix of sweet, spicy, and gorgeous flowers. Here are the descriptions of each. Which one will be your next love?

Laugh with me LeeLee: a woody floral - a light blend of citrus, jasmine & lily blossoms, naturally light scent with a classic feminine style.

  • top notes: cassis, melon, citrus
  • middle notes: black violet, lily, jasmine
  • bottom notes: blonde wood, amber, santal

Something About Sophia: an oriental floral - a dream of oriental blossoms, mango & vanilla, an intriguing & mysterious scent with a free spirit.
  • top notes: mango, freesia
  • middle notes: sheer lily, jasmine sambac, peony petal
  • bottom notes: musk, white caramel, vanilla bean

My Place or Yours Gina: a woody oriental - an alluring affair of pink pepper, wild raspberry & patchouli, a seductively provocative scent with a "flaunt it if you've got it" attitude.
  • top notes: pink pepper, bergamot, tangerine
  • middle notes: peony, wild raspberry, white lily
  • bottom notes: patchouli, tonka bean, vanilla bean

They are available online at benefitcosmetics.com or at Sephora for $36 for 1oz. Spritz Lovely!

Kiehl's Portable Essence Oils

Kiehl’s has added six more of Kiehl’s classic essences to their Portable Essence Oils collection, re-introducing Kiehl’s patrons to some of the original essences once formulated in the original Kiehl’s store at 13th and 3rd in New York’s East Village. The newest Portable Essence Oils ($25) are Amber 1942, Gardenia 1961, Chinese Flowers 1967, Cucumber 1972, Pear 1977, and Pour Homme 1987.

Like all Kiehl’s products, the new Portable Essence Oils are appropriate for use by both women and men, and packaged in convenient roller ball packaging that’s not only handy for travel, but also ideal for layering fragrances to create an endless array of one’s own custom blends. And, like all Kiehl’s products, these new fragrances can be included in one of Kiehl’s custom gifts, created in-store to our customers’ specifications.

AMBER 1942: Kiehl’s customers have always been drawn to Amber for its warm, sweet and long-lasting scent. Amber is fossilized tree resin and the oldest traces originate from the Upper Carboniferous period approximately 345 million years ago.

GARDENIA 1961: Gardenia was first offered at the original Kiehl’s Pharmacy in the early 60s and was an instant classic for its exotically sweet, creamy and floral scent. Originally referred to as “cape jasmine”, Gardenia has over 250 species of flowering plants, native to the tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Indomalaya and Australia.

CHINESE FLOWERS 1967: Chinese Flowers is a blend of multiple fragrance oils and was as much a signature scent on the streets of New York in the early 70s as Musk or Patchouli. Customers still write and call to request the scent or to find any remaining bottles. The original Kiehl’s Pharmacy created Chinese Flowers with a blend of violet and rose (such a precious ingredient in previous centuries that it was used as legal tender) as well as more exotic flowers of Lotus and Ylang Ylang.

CUCUMBER 1972: Avid Kiehl’s users enjoy the uniquely refreshing scent of Cucumber essence – especially since it’s known for its calming properties. Cucumbers were thought to originate over 10,000 years in southern Asia. Early explorers and travelers introduced this vegetable to India and other parts of Asia.

PEAR 1977: In 1647 Peter Stuyvesant, the governor of the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam brought back a pear tree from his native Holland and planted it on his farm. For 220 years, the tree thrived at the location that would form the intersection of Thirteenth Street and Third Avenue in the East Village – today fondly known by New Yorkers as “Pear Tree Corner” and outside the original Kiehl’s Pharmacy. Out in front of the apothecary, Governor Stuyvesant’s historic pear tree shaded patrons and employees alike until 1867. Declared by Harper’s Monthly as “the oldest living thing in New York City” in 1862, the venerable pear tree bore fruit nearly until its demise, when it was struck in a most fateful wagon accident.

On the 12th of November in 2003, Kiehl’s re-planted a pear tree at the same location in honor of the community, officially marking “Pear Tree Corner” once more and received a declaration from New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, designating November 12th “Kiehl’s Day.”

POUR HOMME 1987: Pour Homme was blended especially for the pleasure of Kiehl’s male patrons and includes oils of Cistus, Patchouli, Fir Needle and Vetiver (a dried grassy root once thought in folklore to protect a wearer’s physical and financial safety). To this day, Pour Homme is instantly recognizable and remains a favorite among Kiehl’s customers for its complex concentration of woodsiness.

Gossip Girl Spotted: DKNY Be Delicious and Island Michael Kors

Gossip Girl's Jessica Szohr (aka Vanessa) was spotted sampling scents at Bloomingdale’s in Los Angeles. Looked like she doing some Mother’s Day shopping, picking out fragrance and other gifts for her mom. She was testing the DKNY Be Delicious and Island Michael Kors Bermuda scents (photo credit: Wire Image).

DKNY Be Delicious EDP Spray (1.7 fl oz $55.00) - "A modern feast for the senses. Served in a sleek metal and glass apple bottle, this juicy fragrance combines the scent of apple with a sophisticated blend of exotic flowers and sensual woods. Like the city that inspired it, DKNY Be Delicious celebrates individuality with refreshing spirit."

DKNY Be Delicious Fresh Blossom EDP Spray (1.7 fl oz $55.00) - "DKNY Be Delicious Fresh Blossom transports you to that first stroll of spring in Central Park when it’s abloom with flowers. Lighthearted and intensely feminine, the scent is a mix of luscious fruit and delectable flowers."

Island Michael Kors Bermuda EDP Spray (1.7 fl oz $62.00) - "An enchanting, colorful floral infused with vibrant freesia, native hibiscus, pink peony, jasmine sambac and the aura of driftwood paired with warm cedarwood. Together they capture the essence of this dreamy pink sand paradise. Enchanting. Colorful. Alluring."

All scents are available at Bloomingdale’s, Macy’s, and Sephora stores.

Flower By Kenzo Spring Fragrance Limited Edition

FlowerByKenzo is a lovely powdery floral fragrance that is loved by many. For this spring, Kenzo has come out with a Spring Limited Edition scent. They call it a "sparkling floral" which I think I can agree with. It is welcoming the return of life and brightness, after the cold darkness of winter, with notes of lively mandarin, ginger and yummy lychee fruit. The middle contains parma violet, feesia, and at its base is white musk and incense.

The bottle is also a reflection of spring's arrival, with a singular light-hearted poppy blowing in the breeze, incased in a frosted glass. It sure is a nice addition to my growing collection of perfume bottle.

Pacifica: Yummy Body Butters and Candles

I was a little surprised that a big store like Sephora would decide to carry a little label like Pacifica, but I guess that is how they grow little brands into big ones. I have seen Pacifica products in small boutiques for quite a few years now. Their packaging is very ornate and eye-catching, so they are easy to spot. They have a collection of amazing scent offerings, all tropical and very fruity/floral so it is no wonder I love them ALL. They are also made from mostly natural products and so far I'm happy with everything I've bought from them.

A few months back I picked up a bottle of the perfume spray in (one of my favorite scents) Tuscan Blood Orange at an adorable boutique called Picnic on Polk Street in Russian Hill. I love it because it reminds me of gallivanting around Italy back when I studied abroad in college.

Sephora has chosen not to carry these perfume sprays, only the solid scents, but some of their other offerings are equally as lust-worthy. I picked out a yummy body butter in Brazilian Mango Grapefruit ($15), which is a perfect way to get me in the mood for spring. I always use body butter after I shave, so this just makes that task all the more pleasant.

I also picked up a sweet smelling soy candle in Bali Lime Papaya ($16). My dangerously curious kitten thought the candle smelled so good, he went to sniff it and burned a few whiskers off, poor guy! Don't worry, I burn the candle high up on a book shelf from now on, promise!

Fresh Pomegranate Anise Fragrance

This scent is so different from anything else I wear but it is definitely in my go-to top 5 scents now. Categorized as a woody oriental, I would not think I would like Fresh's Pomegranate Anise AT ALL. But reading the notes, it makes a lot more scent. Of course grapefruit is number one! This "spicy" citrus scent is heavy on the citrus and light on the spice, which is why it appeals to me. The amber, star anise, and sandalwood add a level of dimension and depth, while the mandarin, pomegranate, and magnolia are light and soft on top. I douse myself in it (its a sickness I have) and it just lingers the right amount. The result is a clean, fresh scent with a definite uniqueness.

Nanette Lepore Rollerball Fragrance

I am a total sucker for those bins that Sephora has in front of their cash wrap. Without fail, every time I stand in line at that store, I peruse them and end up adding 15-25 bucks to my purchase. But everything is so cute and little, perfect for impulse purchasing!

On a recent trip to visit family in Seattle, I ended up shopping at the very crowded Sephora in downtown. Standing in the rather long line, I looked down and saw a lovely little rollerball fragrance by Nanette Lepore. When I worked at Nordstrom in college, I coveted many of her gorgeous jackets, yet I could never afford them. Her ultra-fem style is fair sweet and pretty, so when I tested out the fragrance on my wrist, I wasn't surprised when that was what I smelled too! I broke my own rule of fragrance purchasing and bought it for $18 without waiting for the dry down. Thank goodness I love it!

This is a lovely floral for those of us who have a thing for fruit. It is on the sweet side, but in a warm, grown-up way. Sephora.com describes the notes as delicate and white, colorful and sparkling, and warm and sensual. In list form, they are: Moonstone Rose, White Peach, White Cranberry Juices, Magenta Nectar, Black Currant, Orange Jasmine, Persian Lime Juice, Velvet Violet, Amber, Indian Sandalwood.

I may have to pick up a full sized bottle now. It is so darn pretty, with the black bow! This scent is nothing like anything else I wear, and yet it fits me quite well I think. All I know is a certain gentleman couldn't stop smelling me the other night... it got so bad, I wasn't sure if he liked me for me or just me for my scent! I am sure it was a little of both.

Island Michael Kors Burmuda

I was a fan of the original Island by Michael Kors way back when I started this blog over a year ago, but as far I can figure, that has been discontinued and replaced with Island Capri and now Island Bermuda. I tried Capri, but I didn't love the dry down on my skin. I think it smells lovely on other people though. Today I received a sample of Bermuda, which I also really enjoy when it first goes on, but the dry down is a little baby powdery for me. The gift set available at sephora right now would make a cute valentines gift. The white clutch that comes with the perfume and lip gloss looks a little cheap but might be perfect for a night out in Mexico... so start planning you trip now! (I wish...).

Notes: Freesia, Hibiscus, Cassis Buds, Tiare, Peony, Jasmine, Passion Flower, Driftwood, Soft Skin Accord, and Cedar.

Michael Kors Lip Gloss and Rollerball Duo

I never thought I would be into a scent like Michael Kors. It is heady with white florals and would seem to be the type of scent that would go sour on me in no time. But I saw this adorable lip gloss/rollerball duo and I had to pick it up. For $22, you can try out the scent and have a great basic almost nude lip gloss to throw in your purse. To my surprise I rather enjoy the scent. It is a nice change from my usually bright, crispy, fruity scents. Definately romantic, great for a date or something. Though I have noticed a lot of people recognize the scent easily because it is so popular. Oh well, a small price to pay.

Notes include: Dewy Freesia, Tamarind, Chinese Osmanthus, Incense, Fresh Tuberose, White Wings Peony, Blue Orris, Arum Lilies, Cashmere Woods, Musk, Vetiver Haiti.

DKNY Be Delicious Charmingly Delicious Eau de Toilette

I love a good fresh, clean, simple scent. DKNY's Be Delicious Charmingly Delicious Eau de Toilette Spray is just that. I put it on while I was staying at my friend's house and everyone was like, "ooo, what's that smell?", "You make the house smell fantastic!" What more can you ask for? It is simple in its notes (Washinton Apple and Water) and yet bold enough to evoke comments. I love that the bottle looks like a old timey apple juice jar! It a limited edition of the regular Be Delicious scent, with an American apple note added, and "enhanced with energetic solar freshness and dewy watery notes to create a scent full of summer brightness and fresh energy." Love it! I'll be wearing this all year round, though. I want to be light and fresh all the time.

Valentino Rock 'N Rose

The perfect fragrance to me is one that combines a women's beauty and soft, sweetness with something edgy and deep. It has to be just the right combination of these, too sweet and soft and it doesn't hold up or too edgy and it turns sour and too musky after time. Valentino's Rock 'N Rose has just the right amount of both for me. I enjoy all levels of the fragrance: begining, middle and end. Most importantly, I get compliments when I wear it and I love the shape and look of the bottle. It is both romantic and edgy, pink with a hard black crystal cap. Love it.

Notes include: Bergamot, Black Currant, Crunch Green, Orange Blossom, Gardenia, Muguet, Rose, Sandalwood, Orris, Musky Notes, Vanilla, and Heliotrope.

Bvlgari Eau Toilette Green Tea: Glamorously Fresh

As a young girl, I got most of my taste for cosmetics by scrounging through my mother's bathroom drawers. She had a thing for Elizabeth Arden and since it was readily available at our local Macy's, my friend from next door and I would attempt to glamorize our adolescent lives with perfume and makeup from old lady Elizabeth Arden. Yuck. We discovered their Green Tea perfume, probably in middle school, and worshiped it.

When we discovered Sephora, our tastes got more sophisticated. Why of course, we fell in love with Bvlgari (never mind we couldn't pronounce it) version, eau toilette Green Tea. To this day, it reminds me of fresh, clean innocence. It is a young sophisticated scent, easily worn by both young girls or mature women. The difference is, on a woman you might clearly notice the subtle undertones of Italian Bergamot, Tunisian Bitter Orange, Spanish Orange Blossom, Ceylon Cardamom, Jamaican Pepper, Russian Coriander, Bulgarian Rose, Egyptian Jasmine, and Smoked Wood. Well, maybe just because she doesn't dunk herself in it like young girls often do. The green tea is clearly evident though; a clean, fresh scent that is, in my opinion, timeless. I am a very different girl that I was at 14, but I still love it.

Grapefruit ME! More Products to Try

As you may have noticed, I'm CRAAAAZY obsessed with all things GRAPEFRUIT. It is kind of an addiction. But hey, at least I know for sure (more or less) if it has grapefruit in it, I'm going to like it. Here are some of my latest grapefruit finds:

Neutrogena Body Clear Body Wash in Pink Grapefruit: This cheapy drugstore body wash has the scent I love and a bit of salicylic acid to keep body breakouts at bay. It even has little pink scruby beads for mild exfoliation. What a better scent to wake up to, huh?

Sephora Indulgences Pink Grapfruit Body Smoother: This giant tub of gooy body scub is a grapfruit lovers heaven. It lathers nicely and leaves a faint feeling of moisture and scent. After a long scrub in the shower (usually have to turn off the water to get the suds going without having them wash off) I feel fresh and sooo very clean. It is on sale now for $15 so I'm not sure how much longer it will be around.

Marc Jacobs Splash in Grapefruit: This limited edition perfume is really a dream come turn for me. I always love scents with grapefuit in them, but this one concentrates on it the most, adding a touch of ginger and white musk for some depth only. It is a perfect summer day scent, to cool you off during the heat. It is light enough that you can spray it everywhere... and you better believe I will. The huge 10oz eau de toilette is only $68. Not bad, but I wonder how long that will really last me.

Badgley Mischka The Fragrance

This is a fragrance I did not expect to like, right off the bat. From previous experiences I know that I am not a fan of anything in a gold bottle. Does that sound weird? Well, it's been true until now. They are usually just too warm and spicy for me. But this fragrance changed my tune.

Badgley Mischka The Fragrance is inspired, just like the designer fashion collection, by vintage elegance and sophisticated glamor. The bottle reminds me of something you would see in a 1940s Hollywood picture, sitting on a lady's elegant dressing table. It is definitely a heavier scent than I'm used to. I would only wear it at night or maybe in the winter. But I feel like it is very unique and memorable and it almost fits who I am, the ultimate goal in picking one's signature scent.

The tops notes are "romantic fruits" like red wild berries, fresh peach and creme de cassis. In the middle it has a bouquet of "sensuous florals" Osmanthus flower (no idea what that is... aren't fragrance ingredients fun?!), white peony and jasmine. The dry down creates "elegant sensuality" with suede musks, indian sandalwood, caramel amber, and patchouli.

Surprisingly enough it doesn't start to stink on my skin with the dry down like some that are this heavy. I would recommend it for someone who is looking for an elegant, more intense fragrance. Even if they are scared of them like me. Just be sure to get a sample and wearing it for a few days!

Hilary Duff Wrapped With Love

You know you've really made it as a celebrity if you get to create and market your own fragrance. Then when it actually does well and you get to make another one, wow, you must be big time. Well, I but this is how Hilary Duff felt when she came out with Wrapped with Love, after With Love...Hilary Duff did so well.

I personally think the name is pretty cheesy but they are most likely marketing to young girls. What surprised me the most was that I genuinely like this scent. It starts out with fruity notes (iced honeydew, mandarin, and blood orange) then continues with some soft floral flavors (violet, white lily, and mangosteen blossom). At the base there isn't anything very heavy, just rasberry, vanilla bean, and a touch of musk combined with Hilary's favorite (apparently) white chocolate mousse. Since there isn't much in the base, this scent isn't super long lasting, but great for those who like lighter, easier to "wear and not be worn" types of scents.

So, if this sounds like try it on for size. Just becuase it's marketed towards young girls, doesn't mean you won't like it. Available at department stores, 1.7oz for $38.
