Get Some Volume From John Frieda

I was wondering through the isles of Walgreens one day, something I do often on my lunch break, and I came upon the hair styling section. I'm always on the hunt for a new product to give my normally flat, lifeless hair some bounce and ... you guessed it: VOLUME. I am not sure what made me pick up this bottle of John Frieda Luxurious Volume Bountiful Body Mousse out of the many different options available at the drugstore but I did and now I don't regret it. I think this is a great product plain and simple. It does what I want it to and its easy to use. I am careful not to use too much though or I end up blow drying for hours and the end result feels like wig hair... yuck! But just one short squirt (about a tangerine sized ball of mousse comes out) in my palm for my just barely shoulder length hair does me right. I work it in to my wet hair and then blow dry upside down (the secret to bouncy, big hair) and by section with a round brush. I get beautiful voluminous hair all day long. For under $7, you can try it too. Why the heck not?!

New Fresh Firebird Mascara

While I am quite attached to my Cover Girl Lash Blast Mascara, I am an undying beauty junkie. So when the opportunity arose to try a new mascara, I jumped to the task. Fresh's new Firebird Mascara is housed in an absolutely stunning dark green tube with a gold feather pattern on it. The brush and its bristles are HUGE. A few gentle swipes on my lashes and they are coating well. It creates more of a feathery, 70s look than my usual thick dramatic volumized lashes but I like it just the same. Different is good sometimes, you know?! My only complaint is that after 5 hours or so, it seems to fall and smudge a bit on me. Must be because of the super nourishing ingredients like seabuckthorn berry oil, red algae, and panthenol in it... right?! Well, I still say try it out yourself, the tube alone is worth it, if your a sucker for beautiful packaging like me. Available at Fresh.com and at Sephora starting in August.

2008 Glam Beauty Awards: Go Vote!

Head over to Glam and vote for your favorite makeup, skincare, body care, haircare, and other random beauty products in the 2008 Glam Beauty Awards. Its kinda fun to see what they have pulled together for all the categories. I don't like to vote in things like this where I haven't tried most of the products, so I didn't vote for a lot of the skincare and body care sections but I did vote for all the makeup ones. I just LOVE Cover Girl Lash Blast and everyone I know who's tried it agrees. I also enjoyed the miscellaneous section with categories like best beauty accessory and best celebrity endorsement. Go see for yourself and vote up a storm.

Body Butter at The Body Shop: Stock up now!

The Body Shop is having their Buy One Get One Half off sale again on their great body butters and scrubs. I still have yet to find any other body butter I like more. The consistency really is like butter. It feels like it is melting on my skin. I am obsessed with the Grapefruit, but every so often I get the Coconut just to mix it up. So right now I can get both for $30! Not too shabby.

Bored With Your Lashes? Try These!

Cosmetics companies are also coming up with new ways to improve your looks. Sometimes its with formulas, sometimes its with packaging and sometimes its with entirely new products. Here are some interesting things I've come across lately in the world of LASHES:

Givenchy Phenomen'Eyes Mascara: This is the weirdest brush I've ever seen. Apparently, this tiny brush helps to curl and separate your lashes to perfection. I'd be willing to try it just for the novelty. Only available at Sephora.

Model Co Lash Wand Heated Eyelash Curler: I'm not sure about heat getting that close to my eye, but if it gives gorgeous curly lashes I just might try it. Only available online.

Urban Decay Skyscraper Mascara: This seemingly ordinary mascara has a special ingredient: shu extract. This the ancient Chinese herb that promotes health, pigmentation and prevents hair loss. Might be hocus-pocus but it sounds convincing.

Finding My Fragrance: A Journey

I recently learned the hard way how important it is to try out a fragrance on your skin for at least a few hours before you really decide if you like it. I was shopping around at Sephora and I wandered over to the fragrance wall. I had been doing some research on fragrances I might like. I tend toward fresh fruity, floral scents with a bit of depth but nothing too musky. Someone told me I should try, among others, YSL's Young Sexy Lovely. I sprayed it on a scent strip, let it dry and sniffed. I liked what I smelled. It seemed to have all the qualities I like! Then I sprayed it on my own wrists. After about 30 seconds of careful deliberation, I picked up the bottle and put it into my basket.

About 2 hours later, I began to regret my purchase. The scent had dried down to something utterly repulsive. It smelled very musky and spicy and not at all sexy to me! Well, good thing Sephora has an excellent return policy and I hadn't even opened the box besides.

I got my money back and I learned a valuable lesson. TRY BEFORE YOU BUY!!! In perfumes, there are top, middle, and bottom notes. Just because you like the first scents to smell, doesn't mean you'll also like how it dries down. Then there is the effect of your own body chemistry on the scent. The hidden scent, the one not written in the description, is the one you provide yourself.

After that experience I have I have been trying out lots of different scents. Wearing them around for a day or so before I make any rash purchases. It is a journey of sorts, but at least I can record it for you all on here. I hope you stay around for the ride.

Jan Marini Skin Research, Week 4

I am still loving all the products I mentions a few weeks ago in my post about Jan Marini Skin Research. My skin is starting to look fabulous! Almost all my breakouts have cleared up. The ones that still have popped up from time to time are most likely due to a few lazy nights when I didn't wash my face (tisk, tisk) and hormones. But overall my skin looks better than it has in months. I have added two things to my regimen, once again, curiosity of the lovely people at Jan Marini:

Bioglycolic Facial Cleanser: This is a gentle cleanser, great for all skin types. It goes on like a lotion yet it contains powerful glycolic acid to cleanse the skin thoroughly. You just massage it in to dry skin then rinse clean with tepid water. My skin feels clean but not tight or dry at all.

Benzoyl Peroxide 5%: I used this when my acne was at it's worst to kill the P. Acne bacteria that causes pimples. I hate BP gets on my sheets and towels though so I use it very sparingly, wash my hands well with soap after, and let it dry before heading to bed. It works to kill the nasty stuff but at a price!

Brows for Dummies from Anastasia

As I mentioned last week, I am becoming more obsessed with my brows than ever before. They make such a difference, especially when I'm going for the no-makeup makeup look. A little extra definition on my brows really make my eyes seem brighter and I look more awake.

When I first tried Anastasia's Go Brow Universal Brow Pencil, I wasn't impressed. The pencil was very hard and I couldn't get the color to start. But once I warmed it up a bit, I go it working and the texture is great. I was skeptical of a "universal color" as well. How could one color work for everyone? But I do think it might actually work for most people with light, medium, or dark brown hair. It is a mid level brown that is a bit ashy, so it should blend in to most browish brow colors. I use light short strokes to fill in where my brows need some extra color and fullness. They stay put and the color lasts all day. On the other end, is a matte highlighter that is perfect to define below the brow without adding more dark color, just besure you blend it in 1well. I like the simplicity of this product, very streamlined. For $21 you get all you really need for great, easy brows. Currently, it is only available at Sephora stores and of course online.

Anastasia Knows Brows!

I recently got my eyebrows waxed for the first time ever. I am not sure why I've never gone before, other than I thought it wasn't really necessary. I've been plucking on my own for a long time and even though my mom thinks my brows are too thin, I have always been OK with they way they turn out.

More and more though, it seems brows are in the limelight. This whole big huge, dark eye-catching look is not my thing, but it made me wonder if I should have a "professional" take a look at mine and maybe reevaluate the situation. So I made an appointment with the Anastasia lady at my Nordstorm. For $35 I got my brows reshaped with some lovely smelling wax (lavender or something) and lots of friendly advice from a sweet thickly-accented Russian lady whose name slips my mind. She advised me that (oh know, don't say it!) my mother was right, my brows were a little over plucked, I needed to grow a bit in the middle part. But overall, they weren't that bad, at least they were long enough on the sides.

Well now I've bitten the bug and bought into the whole line of products by Anastasia. I never thought I would say this, but now I feel weird leaving the house without touching up my brows! Using just a little color and something to hold them in place, I feel like my eyes pop off my face. Sounds great right?! Well here is how:

The All About Brows Kit is definitely the way to go if you are a brow neophyte like I was. It literally has everything you need to go from ewww to ahhh! My mom even picked one up since she has the opposite problem as me, she never plucks! Well, now she has no excuse. The $75 kit includes fabulous Tweezers, a Brow Powder Duo, four Brow Stencils, a Duo Angle/Spooley Brush, clear Brow Gel, and an Eye Lights highlighting pencil in matte. The kit comes in three shades. I got Ash Blonde, my mom got Medium Ash, and there is also Brunette for all you super dark haired ladies.

I love the brow powder duo because it comes in two shades so you can mix and blend together to create the perfect shade for you. Then you use the brow gel to hold them in place. The stencils are great for anyone who needs a little guidance on how to pluck the stray hairs and the tweezers are top quality. There are also some great guides and how-to videos online at Sephora. I think I should show my mom some of those!

I have also been using the Brow Enhancing Serum by Anastasia at night to try and help me grow back some of the fullness I've plucked away after all these years. I haven't seen much of a difference yet, but I'll keep you posted since these things don't just happen over night! I have my fingers crossed.

Check Out What's in My Bag!

My girl Sarah over at Cupcakes Taste Nice had a great idea for a way to keep her blog going while she is on vacay. She is asking her reader to post pictures of their makeup bags and what in them. I thought, how fun, especially since I just bought a new camera! Thanks to Lilan from The Daily Cookie for recommending her digi, I now am the proud owner of a Canon Power Shot SD750. So far I love it, espeically the HUGE 3" display screen.

Anyways back to my purse! I am currently still looking for the perfect makeup bag, so I literally just have all my products thrown in the bottom of my purse. Terrible I know! So I did the whole contents of my beloved black Francesco Biasa (in no particular order):-Micheal by Micheal Kors sunnies, the only big sunglasses that sit on my nose and not my cheeks
-Hobo wallet, I just love the opalescent color
-Advil, tampon, allergy meds, gum, ya know basics
-Nvey Eco Organic Erase Concealer in Neutral, a great pan concealer for when serious coverage is needed
-Cargo Wet/Dry Powder Foundation in 20
-Make Up For Ever Lift Concealer in 2, just picked it up, will review soon!
-Bvlgari Au The Blanc Refreshing Towel, they were handing them out at Sephora, thought I'd keep it in my bag for a smelly day... hope it smells good!
-MAC Tendertones Lip Balm in E-Z Baby, an almost colorless shine and tons of moisture gloss
-Philosophy Lip Gelato Soul Mates Grapefruit, a super shiny gloss that tastes delish
-Philosophy Kiss Me Red Lip Balm, a touch of color but mostly moisture as well
-Rosebud Salve, a classic balm even the boys can enjoy without feeling girly
(Gosh, can you tell I love/need/have to have lip stuff with me at all times?!?)
-Fresh Firebird Mascara, a free sample I just got today. Can't wait to try it out! Not available yet in stores.

This Summer Love Your Lips With Stila

I'm sitting here being lazy while my mom and aunt pick, pit, and prepare cherries fresh from the garden tree. Yum. I should go help but instead I'm blogging away. So when I came across Stila's Cherry Crush, I thought "How fitting?!" This click pen doubles as a lip and cheek stain. I love the idea of staining yourself with cherries, just not on your clothes. PureOlogy to Hydrate Your Locks

Right now I am in Casper, Wyoming visiting family for a few days. Boy is it different around here than the big city life I'm used to. We went "downtown" on Sunday to run an errand to the cowboy supply store (!) and, I kid you not, there wasn't a soul on the street! It is a cute city, full of charm and character. It's just so different from San Francisco. Some people haven't even heard of Sephora, poor souls. But thank god my Aunt is more versed in the land of products and potions. Staying at her house, I was pleased to see a bottle of PureOlogy shampoo in her bathroom.

Wyoming is extremely dry, and often windy. I need to slather on the moisturizer more often than at home and I need to keep my hair hydrated. So the PureOlogy Hydrate Shampoo worked great. It made my hair so soft and silky, not oily or weighted down at all. It is great for color-treated hair because it contains 100% vegan ingredients. It has no harsh color stripping sulfates and lots of organic botanicals. It does have an pleasant herbal scent, not usually my cup of tea but it not overwhelming.

I now know why my aunt had PureOlogy out here in the prairie. After downtown to headed to Walmart and Target. Apparently that is where everyone in town hangs out on Sundays! Anyways, Target now carries Pureology, online for sure and at many of their stores. I swear, every week they have another "luxury" brand on their shelves (Aveda, Biosilk, Bumble and Bumble, Keratase). This is still not the cheapest shampoo, at $25.99 for 10.1 oz., but it is great if your hair needs protection and hydration pronto.

If you don't know already, you should: the SUN is the number one cause of aging. But if you are like me, you hate slabbing on that think goopie SPF 45 on the beach, let alone everyday! TheBalm BalmShelter SPF 17 Tinted Gloss: A lip gloss that provides shine, color, flavor (strawberry banana to be exact) and protection?! Sounds perfect huh? I think it is pretty darn cute.

Oscar Blandi Capri Sun-Sheild Spray: This stuff is great! It protects your beautiful locks from the damaging rays and even from colorine damage! All the while, providing moisture and shine. Brilliant!

Nail Polish by NARS: Hot for Summer

I don't know about where you all live, but it was HOT in the city of San Francisco today. It supposedly got up to 90 today, unheard for this time of year. Or any time of year for that matter! I was actually thankful that I had to be in my air conditioned office most of the day and that I can wear open toed sandals to work. I got a pedicure last week and picked out a nice raspberry color but now I want something hotter for this HOT weather. Well, NARS cosmetics has just the thing! Their new color Schiap is a true shocking pink, perfect for HOT summer toes. Their formula is long wearing a flexable so it will last at least a week if you're careful. It is even quite sexy on your finger nails. For $16, its worth a shot. Just remember to bring in your own polish when you go get them done, so you can do your own touch ups.

Besides, the tube it comes in is just so darn cute and a perfect summer accessory for only $13. Gorgeous!

CARGO Powder Foundation

After my less than successful attempt at picking out a new powder foundation from MUFE, I went back to Sephora last week and tried again. This time I spent a bit more time and tested out a few powders on my face before I purchased anything.

I ended up picking out a pressed powder compact foundation by CARGO. I've gotten used to using loose mineral powders but it is nice to have a compact that you can throw in your purse without getting everything messy. This particular one can be used wet or dry, but I've just tried it dry so far. I use a brush first and lightly cover my whole face to cut shine and even out the tone. Then I've been using the sponge that comes with it to cover any blemishes or other areas where I want a bit more coverage. So far I like it. The color I picked is good, 20, but I still need to use bronzer since my face is so much whiter than the rest of me. All in all, I'd recommend this as a good basic powder foundation and it comes in quite a few tones so you'll probably be able to find a good match. At $28 its not cheap, but not super expensive either.

Jan Marini Skin Research, Week 1

A huge perk of starting this blog has been getting to try out some amazing and yet out of my price range products. I never dreamed I would get this opportunity all because I wanted to start a hobby with my product obsession! Anyways, the other day Jan Marini Skin Research in San Jose send me some of their fabulous very exclusive skin care products to try out and I wanted to share with you my experiences thus far. I know from experience that it takes longer than a week to see serious changes in your skin. Especially since I've had such terrible breakouts and blackheads for so long now, I don't expect anything to work wonders overnight.

So far though, I like what I am experiencing. Most importantly, I am enjoying using the products which means I have been keeping it up and applying them almost every day morning and night. This isn't always easy for me since I'm constantly on the go and always wanting to try new things. But anyways here are the products and my thoughts:

Bioclear Lotion: I apply this lightweight treatment after I wash my face. It contains both Glycolic and Salicylic Acid, so it really works to exfoliate the dead skin on my face (the AHA, glycolic) and clean out my pores (the BHA, salicylic). It dissolves very quickly and doesn't leave my face feeling sticky. Though I think that has to do with the other products being put on top of it.

C-esta Serum: This one was a surprize to me. I am not sure I've seen a complete transformation of my skin yet, but I love how this stuff feels! Its a milky consistancy and it smells like something fruity. It smooths into my skin in a second and leaves it feeling soft. It contains a lipid soluble vitamin C that s supposed to improve skin elasticity and uneven pigment. I'll give it a few more weeks before I judge its full potential.

Transformation Cream: This cream is a lovely way to hydrate my combination skin. It gives me all the mositure I need without feeling oily or thick. A little goes a long way and it absorbed right away. There is some serious scientific research behind the interesting ingredients (Hyaluronic Acid and Nayad™ to name a few) but all I know is that is makes my skin feel smooth and soft.

Antioxident Face Protectant: This is the best facial sunscreen I've ever tried. Hands down. That says a lot, right? Well, its light-weight, smells nice and absorbs super quick. That is my biggest pet-peeve, sunscreens that just lay on top of your skin forever and never blend in! This one is even SPF 30 and it goes on like a light cream. I just learned about the dangers of free radicals so its nice to know I'm not only protecting myself from the sun but those nasty free radicals too!

So there you go. So far, my skin is still breaking out but that is to be expected since so many of my pore were clogged to begin with. Hopefully in an another week or so I'll see fewer pimples and more clear pores. I'll keep you posted!

MAC Tendertones Lip Balm: A New Favorite Gloss!

I mentioned a bit ago I ordered some things during MAC's friends and family sale. Well, lucky me I grabbed up a winner! I am absolutely in love with my new Tendertones Lip Balm in Sweet Tooth. It looks lovely and lighty shiny pink on, actually keeps my lips moisturized, and even has sunscreen in it! I also enjoy the yummy flavor. It's supposed to be a strawberry-kiwi flavor but I think it's more like watermelon. The glass pot it comes in is a bit heavy, but I think it is such a nice looking pot, I'll let it slide. Try one out yourself before they all sell out, 'cause they will!
